Is your chocolate Fair Trade?

While our chocolate is not certified "Fair Trade", we have found that our methods of sourcing provide equal if not further reliability of transparency in the supply chain that ensure farmers are paid a fair wage. Transparency and equity are key to our sourcing practices.

What does "Bean to Bar" mean?

Bean to bar basically means we make chocolate from SCRATCH! Like from all the raw ingredients. It means we take raw cocoa beans to roast, grind, temper and mold into chocolate bars in-house.

Cadmium & Lead in Chocolate?

We're always happy to answer questions about our chocolate and our supply chain. We are passionate about all things chocolate and that includes our suppliers.

We've included an article from our cacao supplier regarding concerns of cadmium and lead in our cocoa beans: https://www.uncommoncacao.com/blog/2019/5/22/a-deep-dive-into-cadmium-amp-its-impact-on-the-chocolate-industry

Some of the relevant quotes: "At Uncommon Cacao, we run metals testing on all of our beans at least every 2 years. We also test for pathogens in every single shipment and fat content every 3 years (in case new genetics have been propagated on farms)."

"
While we do not currently import beans with cadmium levels higher than 0.8 ppm (the suggested limit by the EU for whole beans), we don’t want to punish an origin by rejecting lots for something they don’t have control over (i.e. the level of cadmium in their soil)."

Additionally, All of our cocoa is both EU and California Prop 65 compliant for Cadmium and Lead levels at the source, and those levels are further reduced by our processing steps. Cacao trees naturally uptake cadmium from acidic soils, but it is the dosage of heavy metals found in the final product that makes the difference.
